The Toyota Land Cruiser needs no introduction. The big burly SUV from the Japanese manufacturer is known as one of the toughest things around. You will find the Land Cruiser bashing sand dunes in Dubai, hauling medicines in the African outback or ferrying gangsters and politicians in the metros of the world.
The Toyota Land Cruiser we have in India is the J200 series which succeeded in the J100 series in 2007. Though the body shell has been the same, the LC200 has undergone a few changes over time. The large horizontally slatted rectangular grille in the front is high mounted and does justice to the 1880mm tall SUV. The LC200 is almost five meters in length and weighs about 2.5 tonnes. The Land Cruiser looks are simple with the square-ish twin-barrel headlamps with chrome extensions from the grille and a sleek front bumper. From the sides, the three-cab SUV looks burly with flared wheel arches and a robust waistline.
The cabin of the Land Cruiser is non-dramatic but in a good way. The black dashboard gets a wooden strip across its width along with a silver accent. The touch-screen infotainment system sits high between the AC vents on the center console. There are quite a lot of switches – to select the drive, driving modes, diff locks, ESP, climate control et al. The front row seats are power-adjustable while the middle row reclines and the third row can be split 50:50 and folded up. The two big dials on the instrument console read speed and revs while the smaller dials read engine temperature, fuel level, and other requisites. The MID allows you to select what stats you would want to keep an eye on.
The LC200 comes with the 4.5-liter turbocharged diesel V8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox with full-time all-wheel-drive. The oil burner develops 261bhp of power and 50Nm of torque. The Land Cruiser is the top of the line SUV from Toyota and features Crawl Control, Terrain Response system, hill hold, hill descent control, traction control, vehicle stability control et al. It also has ten airbags to protect the occupants in case of a mishap. The Land Cruiser competes with the Range Rover Sport and the Land Rover Discovery in the super-luxury SUV segment in the country.

The Toyota Land Cruiser LC200 is all about attitude and true off-roading capabilities. Its intimidating proportions demand respect off other road users who readily oblige as they look puny in comparison. And if that weren’t enough, the XXL cabin with loads of safety features, along with Toyota’s reputation for spectacular build quality gives it a degree of leverage that’s unmatched in its territory.

Toyota launched the updated Land Cruiser 200 in October 2015. The changes could be noticed on the outside as well as on the inside. But, such a jaw-dropping price is enough to make a style statement by the owner of this model vehicle. It is powered by a 4.5 liter 32 valve DOHC V8 diesel engine that produces a maximum power of 265 BHP at 3400 RPM and torque 650 Nm between 1600 to 2600 RPM.

Last week Toyota confirmed that sales of the Land Cruiser had passed the 10 million mark. Ten million! That’s a ridiculous number, even when you consider that the indestructible 4×4 (in all of its various forms) has been in production for the past 68 years.
There’s one generation of the Land Cruiser that remains the most iconic, though – the impossibly cool FJ40. Fancy owning one? Of course, you do.
You’re in luck too – this painstakingly-restored example is currently up for sale at Eclectic Auctions. And it is lovely.
The 40 Series was initially launched back in 1960, but this is a far later 1981 version that was built in the Japanese factory (not all Land Cruisers were). It was well specced when it was new, too – the boxes for power steering and air conditioning were both ticked at the showroom. This is great news. We’re assured the air con is ‘ice-cold’ and the heater ‘piping hot’.
